martin speaks for himself
“I prefer the writing. Although you know you are creating when you’re in the studio, you’re starting totally afresh when you’re writing. I’ve always found it a fascinating process. Sometimes I’ll look at a song that I’ve just written and think that I know where it came from.”
about love I have always found love quite obsessional. People talk about co-dependency; to me I’ve always found there’s something co-dependent about being in love-that’s what love is all about
about sex: “Sexual barriers are silly. My girlfriend and I swap clothes, make-up, anything.”/Nothing is too crazy for me. I don’t even shrink from wearing from time to time something from Christine’s wardrobe
about childhood and school :I was probably a weird child. Because I quite liked school and stuff. I felt secure at school and didn’t want to leave. I failed Maths though.
about drinking : I drink quite a lot. But virtually everybody I know does. Even if I do drink too much, it’s a personal thing.
about politics : a dubious profession; too much power, not enough principle.
about books :I collect them from all over the place. Anything, I just enjoy reading, it occupies a lot of my traveling time
about fans :We’ve never been able to put our finger on why ‘our fans are so obsessive. We do seem to be the group with the most obsessive fans in this business.
about early photographs: Heh heh heh heh, I’m the person who is suffering from those old pictures the most. And all I can do is to laugh. The hardest thing, and I was speaking of that before, is to explain to my daughters why I looked like this
about himself :”I tend personally to get disillusioned by a lot of things. Things that used to seem great don’t seem so great anymore. Perhaps I’m just a very pessimistic person
Daniel Miller despre Martin:
“Martin’s a non-confrontational person, so he tends to let things go unless he feels really strongly about it. We used to call it the Arsenal syndrome, because he told this story once. When we started working together we had that usual conversation about which football team do you support and he said, ‘I suppose I support Arsenal.’ I said, ‘What do you mean?’ He told me he used to go with his friend’s dad but added, ‘I must admit I haven’t really enjoyed it for the last five years but I really didn’t want to say anything, so I’ve kept going.’ That sums up Martin completely. He doesn’t deal with things. He’d prefer to be bored every Saturday afternoon rather than upset somebody by saying he didn’t want to go. It’s quite a sweet kind of thing really.”

As a writer Martin, I feel few have matched you. I believe the earlier work with Alan Wilder especially is some of the finest of the genre, not to mention Daniel Miller’s input.
Early Martin appeared as such an extrovert in his gear didn’t he?. It was always refreshing to see what he’d look like next. He was always the biggest risk taker in that department !
