Mclaren: Hamilton 1, Kovalainen 5.
A perfect race for Hamilton, who saw his gap disappear because of the safety car twice. Favored at the pit stops. Kovalainen had to pit after the second SC period and lost his second place. He passed Alonso with a great move, but missed a gear change on the main straight 10 seconds later and was passed back by the Spaniard.
BMW: Heidfeld 2, Kubica DNF
The typical quiet race for Nick, just like in Canada last year. He never really challenged Lewis. His main contender was Rosberg, which he passed on the pitlane at the first stop. Kubica remained second after the start, but was no match to the leading Mclaren’s pace. Later, he bravely defended his position in front of a light-fuelled Alonso. Nakajima made contact with himat the restart in lap 48, forcing him to call it a day.
Williams: Rosberg 3, Nakajima6
The only team other than Mclaren who ended the Grand Prix with both cars. Nakajima received no penalty for hitting Kubica from behind and finished last, though scoring three points at his second race.
Renault: Alonso 4, Piquet DNF
Alonso drove calmly to fourth, pressing Kubica in the mid stint and getting in a 3-way fight with Raikkonen and Kovalainen. With Kimi dropping back, he remained with the other Finn, being passed at turn 13 and repassing him on the main straight. Piquet had a great start from 21st to 11th, but was passed afterwards by the remaining cars. He was dead last before ending his debut race with a technical problem.
Honda: Barrichello 6 but DQ, Button DNF
Button was an early victim in lap 1, touching Davidson and Webber. Barrichello fended off Raikkonen’s challenge for 7th in the early part of the race, but was eventually caught at turn 3 after several attempts. He tried to make the most off the last safety-car period entering to refuel, just like Massa in Canada last year. The subsequent 10 second penalty made him lose his 3rd place, eventually finishing 6th. 3 hours later he was disqualified for leaving the pit lane on a red light.
Toro Rosso: Bourdais DNF (7), Vettel DNF
Vettel left the Grand Prix after some contact with Fisichella in the first lap, while Bourdais managed to stay ahead of Kubica, Alonso, Kovalainen and Raikkonen in the second part of the race. His engine gave up in lap 55/58, but he managed to make an impression and get two points too.
Ferrari: Raikkonen DNF (8), Massa DNF
Massa made his first error in lap 1, turn 1, sliding out to avoid contact with Kovalainen and hitting the wall. after the nose change, he was last. He made up a couple of positions and sent Coulthard crashing out of the race in lap 25. Six laps later he parks his car. Kimi made a great start from 15th to 8th, being stuck behind Rubens until lap 18. On lap 30 he misses the corner at turn 3 while attacking Kovalainen. On lap 42 he makes another error at the same turn, putting a rear wheel on the grass and spinning behind Glock. He abandons on lap 53, but salvages a point following Barrichello’s DQ.
Toyota: double DNF
Trulli drove in sixth until his first pit stop when his race ended. Glock had a great race following his qualifying misfortunes. He made up the ground step by step, following the consecutive crashes and safety car periods, going wide in lap 44 at the exit of turn 12 and flying over a bump, destroying the suspensions and bringing in the safety car for the last time.
Super Aguri: double DNF
Davidson hit Button on lap 1 and was quickly out of the race, while Sato started from 20 and was 11th at the end of the first lap. A technical failure made him end his race on lap 31.
Red Bull: double DNF
Webber ended his home race prematurely following the first lap crash, while Coulthard missed the opportunity to finish a difficult race when he shut the door behind Massa on lap 25, being thrown in the air.
